Description Participant Requirements Benefits Expectations
 
We are delighted to have you apply to be an ICLCS Fellow. Here are the requirements for each Fellow for three years:

2007-2009, Cohort I; 2008-2010, Cohort II (Fellows will be assigned to one of these Cohorts)
  • Provide verbal and written commitment to district and ICLCS to uphold standards of the program.
  • Abide by National Science Foundation regulations on the use of ICLCS written materials.
  • Sign written agreements for photo and video releases, media and university personnel and other participants' visits, observations, and/or evaluation sessions.
  • Agree to remain in current high school chemistry position for the duration of the program and beyond, in order for both participants and their districts to benefit fully from the program, if at all possible.
  • Attend three, 2-week residential Summer Institutes on the UIUC campus.
  • Attend two,1- 2-day fall and spring workshops at designated ROE.
  • Assure at least a working knowledge of computer basics (i.e., Internet navigation, word processing, excel spreadsheets).
  • Participate in regular, on-line virtual presentations, forums, meetings, mentoring, etc., throughout the academic year.
  • Maintain a reflective e-journal on a regular basis using the program course development tool.
  • Test ICLCS modules during the school year and participate in all module and program evaluations.
  • Participate fully in leadership activities and professional development opportunities outside of the ICLCS.
  • Implement program evaluations to students and secure parental consent.
  • Communicate regularly with staff, mentors, and peers using the virtual network.
  • Share experiences with your colleagues, and in the broader community
  • Take pre and post content and confidence tests focused on your work in the project.
  • Collect student assent and parent consent forms for your chemistry students.
  • Administer pre/post content tests to your students all five years of the project.
  • Complete the project requirements for journaling, use of the electronic communications process and other activities described in the project description.
  • Cooperate with surveys, interviews, and classroom observations by evaluation staff (these will be of select teachers and you may not be in this group but you must consent to be a part if you are selected).
Institution Requirements

We want to make sure that your school district administration will be an advocate for ICLCS Fellows. Each School District is required to provide the following support:

  • Provide verbal and written support of the teacher and a written commitment to the ICLCS.
  • Provide, in writing, a statement that any products created by the teacher through the grant program will remain the property of ICLCS.
  • Provide participating teachers with reliable access to the Internet, preferably high bandwidth connections.
  • Provide appropriate technology in the chemistry classroom for the ICLCS Fellow's use (dedicated PC computer, monitor, scanner, Internet connection, etc.) with at least one computer for Fellow use only.
  • Provide participating teachers access to a dedicated PC computer during the course of the ICLCS for virtual communications (videoconferencing).
  • Provide assistance from the technology staff is provided on an as-needed basis and recognize that local tech support for the ICLCS Fellow has an appropriate priority.
  • Retain the teacher in the chemistry position through the duration of the program and beyond in order to fully benefit from the ICLCS experience, if at all possible.
  • Allow the ICLCS Fellow reasonable opportunity to enter the school building for the purpose of participating in the grant (provide a key and permission to use classroom, department office, computer, etc.) when school is not in session.
  • Allow university personnel, and other participants to visit, observe and/or teach reciprocally in your school/district.
  • Provide dedicated time to students of ICLCS Fellows in the school's computer lab for computational methods and activities.
  • Act as an ambassador of the ICLCS to the public whenever possible.
  • Provide participating educators with opportunities both on- and off-site during the school year, such as teacher professional development days, seminars, workshops or meetings, to present to their peers what they have learned through participation in the program activities by using professional development funds to support the ICLCS Fellow.
  • Permit the Fellow to make copies of modules and presentation materials as needed.
  • Permit the Fellow to provide information to the community through local newsletters or websites.
  • Agree to allow appropriate data collection and evaluation surveys with regard to student and Fellow participation in the program.

Modules that teams develop and use in the classrooms will become a permanent part of the national repository managed by this project.
